Considered one of the most sought-after institutions in the country, BJ Medical College, attached to the renowned Civil Hospital Ahmedabad, has long been a dream destination for aspiring doctors across India. BJMC, referred as Asia's largest civil hospital and the referral hub for all kind of complicated cases of the country, the institution stands as a symbol of excellence but also of immense pressure.
The Throne or The Thorn...?
Securing and sustaining an MBBS seat in such a college is no small feat. But no one pays attention to mental health of these students. Colleges like the BJMC or let's say, whole medical education itself is a high pressure closed circuit. Deadly competitive. Totally depressing because anything less then perfection is seen as scum by this own fraternity. Sky high standards and expectations from parents, government, teachers, peers, and even society barely allow these newly blossoming adolescents breathe.
People forget that these are mere college kids also having a life!
These kids often fail to understand or see the life as bigger picture. And slowly loose themselves, consumed in the on going system of creating great doctors.
Foreign Vs India.
Medical education in India, compressed into a demanding 5.5-year course, exposes students to a level of complexity and workload that is rarely discussed openly. The competitive nature of the field often limits genuine bonding among peers, fostering isolation rather than support. In such a system, many struggle to see life beyond exams, ranks and performance.
Unlike most of foreign countries where medical training spans over a longer duration with structured breaks to reduce burnout, the Indian system offers little respite. Conversations around mental health remain inadequate, and the emotional toll of the profession is frequently overlooked.
The Chaos of the dead
Such tragedies often unfold quietly, without warning or attention. Such breakdowns are often as quite as dropping a needle in crowded Street. No loud crash no drama no attention, just, boom!
A promising, capable and intelligent student is lost, and the silence that follows is deafening. And the world don't stop, or look back!
It highlights a deeper issue within the medical fraternity, where the focus on producing excellent doctors sometimes comes at the cost of their well-being.
The doctor Factory.
This takes us to the question even after studying form a prestigious institution, life is still on the rocks.
There is a pressing need for empathy, open conversations and support systems within the community, because behind every white coat is a human being who may be fighting battles unseen.
Finally, if as a medico you are reading this, help your colleague, your senior, your junior....who knows who is fighting what battle!
