Outrage at Sri Siddhartha Medical College: Professor Proposes to Female Student in Class, Faces Student Backlash

A recent event at a prominent medical institute in Bengaluru has left many shocked and concerned. A 50 year old assistant professor at the Sri Siddhartha Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre in T. Begur near Nelamangala (Bengaluru Rural district), allegedly made an inappropriate personal proposal to a 19 year old female MBBS student during an ongoing lecture.

What Exactly Happened? A Timeline of Events

According to multiple eyewitness accounts and reports from students who recorded the moments on their phones, the professor identified in various sources Md. Abdullah (an assistant professor in the Department of Microbiology) was addressing the class when he made a surprising announcement.

He reportedly told the students that a “very important girl” from the batch had expressed feelings for her. He then singled out the 19 year old student, claiming she had previously said “I love you” to him. To add to the discomfort, he had brought a carton of chocolates and asked them to be distributed among the entire class.

The young woman immediately objected. In the viral video clips, she can be heard confronting the professor directly in front of her peers, denying the claims and demanding proof. She reportedly asked him to take the matter to the principal and questioned the validity of his statements. The professor allegedly referenced CCTV footage as evidence before stepping out of the classroom.

The situation did not end there. Moments later outside the lecture hall, tensions escalated. The student, along with some of her classmates, confronted the professor. In one widely shared clip, the young woman is seen hitting him with her slipper in a moment of visible anger. Other students reportedly joined in, leading to a physical altercation on campus. The professor was verbally abused and physically assaulted before the chaos subsided.

College and Police Response: Swift Action Taken

The Sri Siddhartha Institute of Medical Sciences acted quickly. The college administration has suspended the professor till pending a full inquiry. A senior faculty member Devakar S.V. filed a formal complaint with the Nelamangala Rural Police Station.

Police have registered an FIR against the professor under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) specifically Sections 74, 75(1) and 329(3) which deal with sexual harassment, outraging the modesty of a woman and related offenses. Investigations are underway though neither the student nor the professor has filed a personal complaint so far according to initial police statements. This decisive response from the institution and law enforcement highlights a growing awareness of the need for zero tolerance toward any form of misconduct in educational settings.

Lessons for Educational Institutions Across India

This Bengaluru episode serves as a wake up call for colleges and universities nationwide. Here are a few practical steps that could make a real difference:

  1. Mandatory Ethics Training: Regular workshops for faculty on professional conduct, especially in mentor student relationships.
  2. Strong Internal Complaints Committees: Fully functional bodies under the POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) guidelines with clear confidential reporting processes.
  3. CCTV and Monitoring: Strategic use of surveillance in common areas (while respecting privacy) to deter inappropriate behavior.
  4. Student Awareness Programs: Empowering students to recognize red flags and report issues early without fear of retaliation.
  5. Mental Health Support: Counseling services readily available for both students and faculty dealing with stress or personal challenges.

Medical institutions in particular have a unique responsibility. Future doctors are trained not just in science but in empathy, ethics and patient care. The same values must apply within the campus walls.

Moving Forward: Building Safer Campuses

As the police investigation continues and the college completes its internal probe, one thing is clear: this incident has sparked necessary conversations about respect, boundaries and accountability in Indian higher education.

The young student’s courage in standing up for herself in the moment deserves recognition. At the same time, we must ensure that justice is served fairly and no one student or teacher faces harm beyond what the law prescribes. Incidents like these remind us that education is about more than textbooks and exams. It’s about fostering environments where every individual feels valued, safe and free to focus on growth.
